Whether anxiety was a part of your life before you became a caregiver, or it is something that has emerged since becoming a caregiver, it has the potential to be something that can interfere withCaregiver-in-New-Providence-NJ your daily life, attitude, and even caregiving.  When your anxiety levels are high, you may find it more difficult to do the things you once enjoyed and even give care to the best of your ability.  Fortunately, there are ways you can effectively manage your anxiety so you can be the best caregiver you can be.  Here are just a few tips for caregivers living with anxiety.

Deep Breathing and Mediation

Anxiety, or excessive worrying, often comes in waves.  You may be busy doing a task when your mind suddenly becomes overwhelmed with worry.  While the feeling of anxiety may be very intense, it is important to recognize that it will pass with time.  Sufferers of anxiety may find it helpful to relax, mediate, or breathe deeply during these “waves” or anxiety, letting them dissipate without letting worrisome thoughts spiral out of control.

Have an Anxiety “Emergency Kit”

When your anxiety is high, it is difficult to think clearly.  However, when you anxiety is at bay, it is important to take advantage of this time to create an anxiety “emergency kit.” Think of the common worries you have (such as your loved one’s health, being a good employee, or your relationship with others) and write down positive, logical statements that relate to each one.  For example, if you worry about being a good employee or worry about being fired, try writing down some of the things you do that make you a great employee such as getting to work on time every day, problem solving with coworkers, and handling a tough situation well.  This way, when you have a wave of anxiety, you can read your list to help guide your thoughts back to the positives.

Keep a Journal to Find Patterns

Take some time each day to write about your day in a journal.  Write down the feelings you had, if you experienced anxiety, and what you did about it.  In addition, write down things such as how well-rested you were, what kind of foods you ate, and other activities you did.  Daily journaling can help you to discover patterns and even anxiety triggers, which you can then avoid.

Seek Help for Severe or Chronic Anxiety

Severe and/or chronic anxiety is not just a normal part of caregiving.  If you feel as though your anxiety prevents you from doing things you once enjoyed or prevents you from caregiving effectively, talk to you doctor.  Anxiety is treatable and manageable when you get the help you need.
